Members of the public tried desperately to save a man’s life after he fell ill on a station platform.

British Transport Police were called to West Hampstead tube station shortly after 6.15pm on Friday (August 18) after the man suffered a medical emergency.

Two off-duty medics as well as other members of the public immediately tried to save the man while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

The London Ambulance Service sent an advanced paramedic, an ambulance crew and an incident response officer to the scene.

A spokesperson for the service said: "Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a person was pronounced dead at the scene."

Police have said that the man’s family have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is set to be prepared for the coroner.

West Hampstead station, which is on the Jubilee line, was shut during the incident and did not reopen until around 9.15pm that evening.
