A new exhibition at the Cock Tavern in Somers Town features enigmatic snapshots ‘ripped out of daily life’, writes Alison Oldham.
Ten Years of F***ing Mayhem, the latest exhibition in The Function Room at the Cock Tavern in Somers Town, presents 101 drawings, paintings and collages by Abigail Jones from her ongoing series A Taste for Perfection, made over the last six years and based on episodes from her personal life, global political events and the vagaries and pretensions of the London art world.
The curators describe the often enigmatic works as “ripped out of daily life, quality newspapers, public opinion, remote islands, conversational messages, false currency”. The title work is an Iraq anniversary collectible poster, dated 9 March 2013. Subjects range from a perceptive discussion with a friend, after visiting an exhibition by the Mexican painter Orozco, on the appeal of obituaries, praised for being nostalgic, irrationally concise, tragically wonderful and informative, to the effect of a school becoming an academy on a schoolgirl shown gripped by Sartre’s book Nausea. A refreshing exhibition and venue.
