THE Poetry Society launches its centenary celebrations with a performance poetry championship and speech by outgoing poet laureate Andrew Motion.

As the leading voice for British poets today, the society organises events, runs a networking service and an annual single poem competition.

Mr Motion, who leaves the laureateship next month after a decade of service, gives his valedictory lecture on April 28 at the Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The SLAMbassador UK performance poetry championship takes place on April 30 at the Southbank Centre.

"The Poetry Society is the heart and hands of poetry in the UK," says Mr Motion, who lives in Tufnell Park. "A centre which pours out energy to all parts of the poetry body and a dextrous set of operations which organise poetry's various manifestations. It has a long and distinguished history and has never been so vital or vitalising as it is now."

Tickets for the lecture are available on 0871 663 2500 www.southbankcentre.co.uk.
