UCS Old Boys’ winter blues continued as a 26-5 home defeat against ninth-placed Royston condemned them to their third defeat in a row in Herts/Middlesex Division One.
The Old Boys found themselves 14-0 down in the second half and, although Nathaniel Breakwell reduced the arrears and young Finn McIntyre enjoyed an encouraging first-team debut, the gap widened again before the end.
With their home ground on Ranulf Road waterlogged, UCS moved the fixture to Regent’s Park – and an unusually passive defensive line was breached after 10 minutes as Royston scored from a maul.
The visitors missed a penalty but nonetheless led 7-0 at the interval and, after Ahmed Ghanem’s try was controversially disallowed, they doubled their advantage.
The Old Boys struck back and Breakwell dotted down after a strong passage of play from the pack, but Royston dominated the possession for the rest of the game and touched down twice more to secure a bonus point.
