Wingate & Finchley set a new points record and leapfrogged Metropolitan Police to move into the play-off spots on Saturday after a valuable 2-1 victory away against their promotion rivals on Saturday.

The Blues’ previous best points tally in the Ryman League Premier Division was 59 in the 2011-12 campaign, but their latest win means they have already eclipsed that total, reaching 60 points with eight games still to go.

Wingate took the lead in the 21st minute when David Knight delivered a free kick to captain Marc Weatherstone, who headed the ball across goal for Karl Oliyide to tap home unmarked at the far post.

Knight, Rob Laney, Ola Sogbanmu and Tommy Tejan-Sie all had chances to double the lead and the second goal came midway through the second period as Laney crossed for Knight, who finished.

Bradley Hudson-Odoi pulled a goal back with a deflected strike five minutes from time, but it was Wingate who had the final chance as Scott Shulton’s deflected effort rolled inches wide of the far post.

Meanwhile, Wingate’s director of football David Norman has informed four players – Shulton, Richard Graham, Paul Wright and Ronayne Marsh-Brown that they are free to leave the club.

Norman said: “Following conversations with the chairman, and in line with our policy, the club agree with the above players being released due to the club not considering retaining the players for next season.”

“This is the part of football that nobody likes – these players have given everything when selected. They are not only players but friends. We are in a strong position, however I have a commitment to develop youth players.”
