Nicky Shorey has a 100 per cent record so far, but can expect a big challenge on Saturday

Nicky Shorey has enjoyed a dream first week as Wingate & Finchley manager after his team secured back-to-back 1-0 Bostik Premier victories.

The former Reading full-back took charge of his first game in management on Saturday and the Blues earned a hard-fought win over Leatherhead in front of 225 spectators at the Maurice Rebak Stadium.

Marc Charles-Smith scored the only goal of the match on Non-League Day and Wingate followed this up with another 1-0 victory on Tuesday.

Reece Beckles-Richards hit the winner at basement club Burgess Hill Town and Shane Gore, who has secured three consecutive clean sheets now, believes the Summers Lane outfit are very fortunate.

He said: “Nicky and Glen (Little – Shorey’s assistant) have obviously played in the Premier League, so they know how to perform at the highest level.

“To have Keith (Rowland) – another Premier League player as boss – and then Nicky, we are very lucky in non-league, at this club, to share their experiences and be around them.

“Nicky and Glen seem like great guys and I hope the boys will take in their advice, which can only be beneficial.”

Experienced Gore will aim to make the most of his time under Shorey and Little and will be eager to help them earn more success this week.

Wingate make the trip to Surrey on Saturday to take on Dorking Wanderers expecting a competitive encounter with a team doing well this season.

After finishing 14th in the Bostik Premier last term, the Wanderers have progressed this campaign and are fourth after 10 games.

The Blues, after their recent 1-0 wins over Leatherhead and Burgess Hill, have moved up to 12th now on 14 points from 11 matches.

Following Saturday’s league encounter, Shorey will turn his attention to the London Senior Cup with Wingate set to play their first game in the competition on Tuesday.

Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division side Cockfosters make the short trip to the Maurice Rebak Stadium for a 7.45pm kick-off on October 23.

Wingate lost in the first round of the competition on penalties last season after a 2-2 draw at Hendon.
