Whitefield School secured their first piece of silverware after winning the Lee Valley School Festival.

Whitefield, who are based on Claremont Road, won all of their seven games at the tournament and only conceded two goals, while Tyreece Gayle was the top goalscorer, registering 14 times.

“Having been training since last September and represented Barnet at the London Youth Games in July, the team have now got their hands on a trophy,” said Oliver Eaton, who is in charge of the team.

The competition involved pupils aged 11 to 13 from schools in London, Essex and Hertfordshire – and the players got the chance to meet Great Britain’s all-time leading goalscorer Ashley Jackson (pictured centre), who has struck over 130 times for his country and been to the Olympics on three occasions, including the Rio Games.

The two-day Schools Festival was a celebration of hockey and was part of the commitment made by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority to deliver a sustainable legacy following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
