Paddington’s Tin-Tin Ho was unbeatable as she helped England to a top-10 finish in the team event at the European Youth Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The 17-year-old, who lives in Upbrook Mews and used to attend St Joseph’s Catholic School in Maida Vale, featured alongside Maria Tsaptsinos and Lois Peake and won all her matches as England finished seventh – comfortably exceeding the target of a top-16 finish set by Table Tennis England.

England made it through the qualifying group with few alarms against Greece, Finland, Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina – and they then won their first-round clash against Estonia.

That was followed by a 3-1 victory over Germany in the first of the play-offs for the positions between one and 16, but they paid a heavy price as Tsaptsinos had to withdraw from the rest of the tournament with a shoulder injury.

It meant England trailed Romania 2-0 before they had even started their quarter-final and, despite Ho winning both of her matches – including a 3-0 (11-8, 11-6, 15-13) victory over European No 1 junior Adina Diaconu – the Romanians sealed a 3-2 triumph.

Ho’s two victories could not prevent a 3-2 defeat against Sweden in the next round, but England won their final play-off against Belgium by the same score to finish in seventh position.

Ho, who is ranked as the No 15 junior in Europe, also hit her target by reaching the last 16 of the singles, where she was beaten 4-2 (11-5, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 3-11, 11-6) by No 10 Daria Chernova of Russia.

Tsaptsinos’ injury meant Ho had to withdraw from the girls’ doubles competition while, in the mixed doubles, she and partner Helshan Weerasinghe were eliminated in the first round – the last 64 – by Turkey’s Talha Yigenler and Simay Kulakceken.
