The success of the borough’s young sporting talents was celebrated at an awards night at the Camden Centre last Wednesday, with around 200 children attending to see 20 presentations.
Chelsea Ladies manager Emma Hayes MBE and the Mayor of Camden, Councillor Nadia Shah, were among the guests as schools, teams, individuals and volunteers were rewarded for their efforts over the past year.
The Mayor’s Outstanding Achievement Award went to the para indoor rowing team from Swiss Cottage School after all three members won medals in their individual events, with one silver and two bronzes.
Meanwhile, the Outstanding Team prize went to the fencing team, who improved their placing at the London Youth Games by eight places, jumping from 12th to fourth.
The Outstanding Boys’ Team was the eight-man Under-11 cross-country squad, who won their race at Parliament Hill and were crowned champions in their age group – and the Outstanding Girls’ Team was the football side, who moved up from 17th in the 2015 Youth Games to third in the latest edition.
The volunteer award went to Zakaria Laidi, who has clocked up more than 500 hours of volunteering as he works towards becoming a school PE teacher.
Hayes, who grew up in Camden Town, attended Parliament Hill School and worked as a sports development officer at Camden Council before winning the women’s league and cup double with Chelsea in 2015, spoke at the event.
