Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara helped launch National Cricket Week with a visit to an award-winning street cricket project in Gospel Oak.

Camden Street is run by the Queens Crescent Community Centre and GOAL (Gospel Oak Action Lion) Youth Club – with help from Middlesex County Cricket Club – on the Malden Road pitches and at the Dome Youth centre.

And Surrey’s Sangakkara dropped in for the launch and to meet young people and coach Salem Ali, who helped the project scoop a Chance to Shine award, with the event filmed by Sky TV.

The Chance to Shine programme aims to spread the power of cricket and street cricket is played with a tape ball on short pitches, designed for urban areas where youngsters have no chance to play the sport in its traditional form.

Youth worker and project leader Ali is a graduate of QCCA youth club and further information on Street Cricket is at chancetoshine.org
