Two of Salle Paul’s fencers, Clare Halsted and Steve Fox, have won gold medals at the British Veterans fencing competition, qualifying to represent Great Britain at the Veteran World Championships in Hungary in October.

Halsted, who lives in Dartmouth Park in Camden, is a previous world champion and is enjoying a return to form after a short break from the sport. She competed in the women’s individual and team foil events at the 1972 and 1976 summer Olympics and has previously won silver and then the gold medal at the 2012 Veteran World Championships in Krems, Austria.

Halsted, who works as a GP in Hendon, is also the welfare officer at Salle Paul, which is based at the Leon Paul Fencing Centre in Hendon – and she trains with the club’s head coach, GB national foil coach Maciej Wojtkowiak.

Fox also trains with Wojtkowiak, and he too won gold at the British Veterans tournament.

Having previously won a bronze medal at the 2010 Veteran World Championships in Porec, Croatia, he is determined to bring home the gold this year.
