Herts/Middlesex One: UCS Old Boys 7 Hendon 30
Hendon received an early Christmas present with a 30-7 success over rivals UCS Old Boys in Herts/Middlesex One.
Though Old Boys, who were missing several players, were the home side, the match was played at Hendon’s Greenlands Lane ground.
Hendon started brightly and scored the opening try in the fifth minute when, from the back of a ruck, Billy Burrell passed to Will Theaker, with the wing running in for a try that the former converted.
The heavier UCS pack tried to carry the ball up the slope at Greenlands Lane, but to no avail.
Turnover ball then presented the Greenlands Lane club with a chance to notch another try as Chris Kiyingi crossed from the wing, with Burrell again converting to make it 14-0 to the visitors after 20 minutes.
Old Boys continued to try to utilise their strength in the pack, which paid dividends when Sam Richardson ran through the middle of a ruck to score a converted try.
Hendon, though, were able to hit back before the half was out when Theaker notched his second try of the match.
The move started when UCS cleared their lines with a kick that was collected by the wing, who ran the length of the pitch before dotting down.
The conversion, though, was missed as Hendon held a 19-7 advantage over Old Boys at the break.
The Greenlands Lane club continued to thwart UCS early in the second half, and the home team’s frustration led to a penalty for offside.
Burrell took full advantage of the chance to extend Hendon’s lead with a penalty, before bisecting the posts again with another three-point opportunity soon after with Old Boys having infringed at the breakdown.
In defence, Toby Ikwueke and Cosy Mutuma impressed for the away side as they kept UCS mostly at bay.
There was also still time for Hendon to secure a bonus point with their fourth try when Tom Mathias crossed after Theaker was stopped short.
It was a fine end to the calendar year for the Greenlands Lane club, who are next in action at home to Saracens Amateurs on January 5.
Old Boys, meanwhile, are set to begin 2019 with a trip to Finsbury Park in the league, also on January 5.
