Wingate & Finchley winger Alex Addai says he is brimming with confidence at his new club after setting up Saturday’s late winner against 10-man Leiston.

The 22-year-old joined the Blues on loan from Grays Athletic in January and scored twice in his first five games before delivering the cross as Karl Oliyide struck the only goal in the 88th minute at the weekend, securing a second successive victory in the Ryman League Premier Division.

“I haven’t got a bad word to say about anyone – from the skipper down they’re a quality bunch of lads, everyone’s made me feel really welcome,” said Addai. “I’m settling in really well. The boys give me loads of confidence and so do the management and I can only say thank you to all the boys and the staff for looking after me.”

Addai added: “I thought it was a hard-fought, hard-earned victory [on Saturday]. Everyone dug deep.

“I thought when they went down to 10 men it favoured them, they were a lot tighter and didn’t really give us anything, but eventually we broke the deadlock.

“Persistence does pay off. It got to a stage in the game where I thought ‘it might just end 0-0’, but I listened to Niels [first-team coach Danny Nielsen] and the gaffer and stayed out wide and thankfully I got the cross in and Karl produced the goods.”

Wingate went on to reach the semi-finals of the Ryman League Cup on Tuesday night.

They triumphed 3-1 away against local rivals Enfield Town after a first-half hat-trick from Billy Healey, who took his tally to 29 goals for the season.

However, there was sad news off the field as it emerged that Wingate FC founder Maurice Rebak had passed away at the age of 95.

Rebak was the last surviving founding member of the club, which was established in 1946 and merged with Finchley FC in 1991.
