Daniel Bingham, a swimming teacher and personal trainer from Hampstead, is launching a new triathlon club.

There were a veritable host of British Olympic heroes at London 2012 – not least the brilliant Brownlee brothers, who secured the gold and bronze medals in the triathlon.

It was impossible not to be inspired by the endurance shown by Alistair and Jonathan as they swam, cycled and ran their way to glory in Hyde Park – and now a personal trainer from Hampstead is giving local residents the opportunity to get involved and show their mettle.

Daniel Bingham lives in Agincourt Road and works as a swimming teacher and personal trainer at the David Lloyd gym in East Finchley and Paul Dillon Swimming at University College School in Hampstead.

A triathlon enthusiast, the 37-year-old competed for Great Britain at the World Championships in Madeira in 2004, and next month he will launch the new Hampstead Triathlon Club.

“I’ve been doing triathlons for 20 years, since I was 18 years old, and I’ve seen the sport develop into what it is now,” Bingham told Ham&High Sport.

“I’ve spoken to lots of people and they’re really keen for a local club. You’ve only got to go to the Lido between April and September and you see people in their wetsuits doing their training.

“We’ve got brilliant facilities in the area with the Lido, the Heath and the fantastic 30 metre pool at Kentish Town, and I’m really keen to use those facilities to get people involved in sport.

“The Olympics has been a massive help in raising the profile of the triathlon, and I think people were watching it and thinking ‘wow, could I do that? How would I get started?’

“Obviously it really helped that Britain did so well, with the Brownlee brothers getting the gold and the bronze. I was there, I was right on the barrier and the atmosphere was incredible. It was 10 deep behind me.

“I think what they achieved at the Olympics has given a huge boost to the sport and has inspired everyone – adults and kids.”

Bingham has secured affiliation with the British Triathlon Federation and has booked swimming training sessions at Kentish Town sports centre on Wednesday evenings (8-9pm), starting on November 7.

“I want to get local people together and establish a club where they can share a common interest, meet similar people, discuss training and have that social aspect too,” he said. “I don’t want to take over the world straight away though, it’s got to be a step by step process.

“The idea is to start with those who are aged 15-plus and get everything established, and then once everything’s off the ground I’d definitely look to include a junior section.

“We’ll start with the swimming for now as it’s winter time, but we’ll gradually introduce bike and run sessions when there’s more light in the evenings.”

The club will initially charge 150 for a block of 12 one-hour swimming coaching sessions, with eight swimmers in a lane.

Bingham then plans to add a Tuesday night session in January – and an extra lane – with membership reducing the fees to around 120, which will also allow the purchase of club kit.

The triathlon is certainly not a walk in the park, and even the shortest ‘sprint’ distance is sure to test the stamina – but Bingham says there will be no pressure to compete.

“I hate elitism, I want everyone to get involved – and you don’t have to race,” he said.

“You can just come along and enjoy the training and improve your fitness, and then if you decide you want to get into racing we can take you to events around the country.”
