Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele celebrated his latest England call-up by watching another Premier League match from the bench.

While regular first-team football is usually a prerequisite for international recognition, Steele remains a favourite of national team boss Thomas Tuchel despite his limited action at club level.

The 36-year-old, who was this week included in Tuchel’s squad for Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain, was a substitute for Brighton’s clash with Brentford on Sunday and has not made a Premier League appearance since August 2024.

That came in a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at the Amex Stadium – Fabian Hurzeler’s first home game in charge of the Seagulls.

Uncapped Steele was first named in an England squad in March and was part of his country’s travelling party at this summer’s World Cup as a training goalkeeper.

With Netherlands international Bart Verbruggen firmly established as Albion’s first-choice keeper, Steele has been limited to two Carabao Cup appearances this term. Whether he ever wins an England cap is another matter.
