Camden entered 19 fencers in foil and sabre weapons at the weekend’s London Youth Fencing Championships in Hendon – and they came away with 13 medals.

Camden won six golds, which was the largest number by any club in the region, achieving their best result in recent years and reinforcing the club’s continued policy of youth development.

All of the medallists have qualified for the British Youth Championships, which will take place in Sheffield in May.

Camden were particularly successful in the Under-14 boys’ sabre, filling six of the top seven places – including all three spots on the podium.

Matthew Pease came first, while Mark Obriomo was second and Zak Klein came third – and Danell Edwards, Jack Preston-Cowell and Lochie Springett finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Camden were similarly dominant in the Under-12 boys’ sabre tournament, with Kajetan McDonell taking first place, Benjamin Amsalem securing second and Tulliver Hyams coming third.

Meanwhile, Jean Baptiste Baigneres picked up the gold in the Under-12 boys’ foil, with club-mate Sam McKinley scooping the bronze, while Hassan Sachee was 16th and Lewis Appiagyei came 35th.

Christian Lindsay and Achilles Bergne were first and second respectively in the Under-16 boys’ sabre, and Sophia Yang claimed top spot in the Under-14 girls’ sabre.

Isabel Nelson secured silver in the Under-12 girls’ sabre, and Ben Stezaker – who also trains with Salle Paul Fencing Club – maintained the gold rush with first place in the Under-14 boys’ foil, while Carlo Revel-Chion was 19th.

A number of other Camden fencers, primarily in the older age groups, who were medallists or involved in the final tableau at last year’s British Youth Championships, will contest the pre-qualifiers at this year’s event.

These include Jonathon Webb, Rubin Amsalem, William Moore, Eden Amsalem and Lumeng Yang.

Salle Paul were also in action in Hendon at the weekend – and they picked up four goals and two bronzes.

They shared Stezaker’s success – and he beat another Salle Paul fencer, Brij Gautam en route to his gold, leaving Gautam with the bronze in the Under-14 boys’ foil.

Amanda Mond was first in her Under-12 age group, and there were bronzes for Sophie Abrahams (Under-18), Jessie-May Wilson (Under-14) and Matthew Abrahams (Under-14), who trains at Salle Paul but competes for The Lansdowne Club.

Salle Paul’s fencers all train in a new purpose-built venue, which was opened in September 2013, at the Leon Paul Fencing Centre at Hendon.

The centre has 24 permanent metal pistes, and training facilities all year round for children and adults, from beginners to elite Olympic-standard fencers.

A new children’s beginner course for eight to 12-year-old boys and girls is starting after Easter, with spaces still available.

Meanwhile, a new after-school club called Leon Paul Spartans is being held for five to seven-year-olds. For details, visit www.sallepaul.co.uk or email sallepaul@leonpaulfencingcentre.com.
