FA Cup third qualifying round: Haringey Borough 2 AFC Sudbury 1

Chinedu McKenzie continued his sensational form in the FA Cup this season with a brace for Haringey Borough to send them into the fourth qualifying round of the competition with a 2-1 win over AFC Sudbury on Saturday.

The former Romford man had scored in each of the previous three rounds and maintained that record with a double at Coles Park against the Bostik North opponents.

Prize money of £15,000 was up for grabs for the winner of the tie and a shock was on the cards after only 16 minutes.

Sudbury’s Phil Kelly cut in from the left, and fired towards goal and although Valery Pajetet saved, he could only parry against his own defender Michael O’Donoghue and the ball rolled into the Haringey net.

The Suds couldn’t hold onto their lead until the break though, as Borough levelled in the 39th minute when McKenzie fired home following a corner.

It remained 1-1 until half time and both sides pushed for the crucial third goal of the tie after the restart and it arrived in the 57th minute.

Another corner proved decisive as Sudbury failed to deal with the set-piece and Scott Mitchell’s effort deflected off McKenzie and found the net.

The Haringey forward claimed the goal, but the visitors could have equalised almost 60 seconds later when Reece Harris got put through.

Pajetet produced an important save, however, to keep Tom Loizou’s team ahead and it ended 2-1 at Coles Park in front of an attendance of 209.

Borough will found out their opponents for the next round later this afternoon and will hope for another home draw.
