Long-haul Harriers hit cruise control

LONG-DISTANCE specialists Henry Dodwell and Glen Saqui won their respective 5,000m races as Highgate Harriers finished third in their Southern League division one match on Saturday.
Dodwell ran 15mins 17secs in the A-string race at Ashford while Glen Saqui (15mins 27.8secs) topped the B-string - both runners pulled clear of the chasing packs.
Meanwhile, American athlete Matthew Dore-Weeks came second in the B long jump (5.89m) and A high jump (1.85m) both of which were personal bests.
Dore-Weeks was also second in the A 110m hurdles in 16.4secs.
Simon Child was second in the A 110m hurdles in 16.6secs and won the B triple jump with 12.26m.
Two new members who again proved their worth by collecting points for the team were Holloway architect Calvin Chua and Frenchman Thierry Lebreton.
Chua was second in the A long jump with 6.20m and fourth in the B high jump. Lebreton was asked to run the B 3,000m steeplechase, which he had never attempted before, and was second
Dodwell was second in the A 3,000m steeplechase in 9mins 52.4secs but he was up against Essex champion Robert Warner who won the event for Havering.
Lebreton came fourth in the A javelin and third in the B discus.
Romanian John Tartaru came third in the A hammer, fifth in the B javelin, fourth in the A shot-put and fourth in the A discus.
Dwain Bromfield was back in action in the sprints, coming second in the A 100m (11.0secs) and the B 200m (22.8secs).
Francis Asante was third in the B 100m (11.7secs) and Marius Guei was third in the B 200m (23.9secs).
Atak Diing finished in under two minutes again in the A 800m, coming fourth in 1min 59.5secs and was third in the B 400m in 52.9secs.
Glen Saqui came third in the A 1,500m in 4mins 9.6secs and Peter Downie finished second in the B 1,500m in 4mins 15.6secs.
Highgate Harriers finished second behind Yeovil in the 4x400m in 3mins 28.1secs. Highgate's relay team comprised Simon Child, Rory Campbell, Roy Smith and Diing.
Yeovil won the meet with 128 points, ahead of Havering Maysbrook (110) and Highgate Harriers (108).
Highgate team manager Richard Priestley said: "I am still hopeful Highgate can make the qualifier by the end of the season."
The next Southern League meet is at Brighton on June 23.
l On Sunday, Harriers' Simeon Williamson was fifth in the 100m at the Norwich Union International meet in Glasgow. He ran a season's best of 10.51 secs, behind the race winner Craig Pickering.
