Tom Kimberley netted twice as West Hampstead bounced back from a rare league setback to book their place in the EH Trophy quarter-finals.

WH suffered only their second league defeat of the season when they went down 4-2 at Tulse Hill & Dulwich on Saturday, but recovered to win their Trophy tie against Letchworth 24 hours later.

The Brent Cross club applied pressure during the first 20 minutes, but could not make the breakthrough until a well-worked short corner routine culminated in a smart deflection by Dave Leech to make it 1-0.

WH added a fortunate second goal soon afterwards when vice-captain Tom Bullock took a quick free hit and found Kimberley, who miscontrolled the ball but it rolled past the Letchworth keeper, who was wrong-footed.

Letchworth pulled a goal back after Ben Battcock had been sin-binned for deliberately breaking down play – and the same player was then sent off for a stick tackle.

The visitors made it 2-2, but West Hampstead’s 10 remaining men dug in and regained the advantage through Mark Little before Kimberley scored his second of the game.

Tim Wischusen sealed WH’s victory with a fifth goal and they now travel to Leeds in a repeat of last year’s tense quarter-final, which the Londoners won 4-3 with a hat-trick from Kimberley.

“They are a well-organised side and the lengthy travel does not help, especially after a game on the Saturday,” said Bullock. “That said, we are confident and fully expect to come away from there with a place booked in the semi-finals.”

Leech and Wischusen put WH 2-1 up on Saturday after Tulse Hill’s Felix Flower had opened the scoring, but Mike Richardson levelled and a Martyn White double in the second half sealed the visitors’ fate.
