Full-back Will Jones scored a hat-trick as UCS Old Boys ran in eight tries to record their first victory in six games in Herts/Middlesex Division One on Saturday.

Jones opened the scoring and went on to touch down twice in the second half, while Nathaniel Breakwell went over twice, and Alex Lowe, Dan Stewart, Alex Yousefian also got their names on the scoresheet in a comprehensive 46-5 triumph at Harrow’s ground in Stanmore.

It was revenge for the Old Boys’ 13-7 defeat in November’s reverse fixture and it ended a run of four straight defeats, taking UCS up to sixth place in the table as they leapfrogged Old Streetonians.

Coach Carl Bradshaw said: “The execution was top-class, with good decisions on and off the ball. Some superb tries added the gloss to what was an epic defensive display.

“Our defensive goal is to get the ball back so we can score, and we achieved that by putting pressure on the opposition.”

Captain Christian Henk delivered an inspirational speech on his birthday and UCS started strongly.

With only a few minutes on the clock, fly-half Stewart carried the ball across the pitch and inside centre Tom Arnold cut back inside to beat the Barnet defence. He was pulled down short but the pack secured the ball quickly and, after a few passes towards the left corner, Jones went over the whitewash.

The Old Boys soon scored again, claiming the ball from the restart and working their way up the pitch before Stewart broke and passed inside to Lowe, who went under the posts untouched.

Two further tries followed as UCS banked the bonus point inside 25 minutes, with Stewart and Breakwell getting over the line, while the defensive work was praised at the interval – Ryan Waller was particularly effective around the fringes and tackled powerfully.

Again, the Old Boys were rapidly out of the traps after the break and were soon adding to their tally.

David O’Dwyer broke blind and, after some neat interplay, substitute Yousefian got the ball for the first time and ran 40 metres to score his first try for the senior team.

Jones then went over twice either side of Breakwell’s second score to record his first treble for the club – and UCS nearly passed the 50-minute mark as a fine break ended with Ahmed Ghanem dropping the ball over the line.

The Old Boys have a good opportunity to earn another victory at the weekend when they visit basement boys Old Millhillians, who have lost 15 of their 16 league games.
