Striker Niko Muir is confident Hendon can go to National League side Boreham Wood and produce an FA Cup upset next weekend after the Greens reached the fourth qualifying round for the first time in four years.

While the Dons have struggled in the Ryman League Premier Division so far this term, taking just 10 points from their first 10 games, they are enjoying a lucrative cup run.

Karl Oliyide, Spencer McCall and Muir – who all joined Hendon in the summer – were on target as Gary McCann’s side earned a 3-0 home win over AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the third qualifying round on Saturday, increasing the club’s winnings to £15,000.

Hendon’s next challenge in the competition is a tough one as they visit Boreham Wood, who play two divisions above them, on Saturday October 15 – but Muir says the Dons have nothing to fear.

“I think we can go there and turn them over,” said the 23-year-old. “Everyone will have to be at their best and we’ll have to execute our game plan to perfection, but there’s no reason we can’t do that and get through to the first round - that would be massive for us.

“The manager told us all in the group chat on Whatsapp who we were drawn against and everyone was just buzzing about it. We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing in the cup and I truly believe we can turn them over if we do that.

Muir, who rejoined the club this summer following spells with Northwood, Wingate & Finchley and VCD Athletic, had interest from other Ryman League Premier Division sides - but a conversation with his long-term friend and Dons favourite Aaron Morgan gave him a good feeling about a return to Hendon.

And, as the Greens prepare for league games against Lowestoft Town and Kingstonian in the next week, ahead of their big FA Cup clash, he is confident the 2015 play-off finalists will not be in the bottom three places for long.

“I spoke to Aaron in pre-season and he was telling me to come down,” said Muir.

“At that time I wasn’t sure what I was doing but I was really impressed with what I heard from him.

“He’s a good friend of mine that I’ve made through the clubs we’ve been at. I’ve played against him a few times, and we’ve spoke a lot in recent years.

Muir added: “Training is a lot more advanced from what I have experienced elsewhere at this level and set-piece drills are really structured, so everyone knows exactly what they’re doing and what is expected of them on a matchday.

“Everyone’s pushing for the same goal - we want to be challenging for promotion - and I know I’m at the right club with the right environment to push myself on.

“There have been a lot of new faces around the group and we’ve gelled well together, although results haven’t gone as well as we’ve have liked in the league - but I think we’ll get to where we need to be.

“I think we’ll definitely be up there come the end of the season with the players we’ve got.

“I wouldn’t have come to this club if I didn’t think we could achieve something special.

“On a personal level, I always set myself a target of getting 10 to 15 goals by Christmas and then who knows what can happen after that point.”
