Guildford Phoenix 3 Haringey Huskies 1

Haringey Huskies fell to their third straight National League South Two defeat as they were out edge 3-1 by new boys Guildford Phoenix.

The first ever game between these two clubs was a tight contest with Guildford coming out on top after getting off to a great start by taking the lead after 45 seconds.

A Luke Tull pass put Bailey Wootton clean through on goal and he made no mistake slotting the puck under netminder David Wride.

It was a particularly busy first period for Wride and he turned away 24 more shots on goal, notably stopping a breakaway chance for Oliver Denis and several efforts from former Haringey man Josh Abbott.

Huskies came into the game a little more in the second session as the contest became much tighter, though Wride was still the busier netminder making a great save to deny Haydn Wootton on the doorstep in the 28th minute. Guildford hit some penalty trouble in the latter part of the session and the game had a sudden burst of activity. Lewis Jones came close on the back stick before a short-handed effort from Andrew Hemmings produced a great save from Wride.

Still on the powerplay, Haringey equalised when Jones’ breakout pass put Dan Peters through on goal.

He fired high into the net for his second goal in as many games.

The visitors took some momentum into the third period and had a strong five or six minutes, but Jacob Stoodley in the Phoenix net stood firm.

Guildford then regained the lead in the 48th minute when Hemmings surged forward and saw his shot saved with Scott Greenfield tagging along to bury the rebound.

They made the game safe in the 56th minute with a powerplay goal, patiently playing the puck around until Abbott fired in a beauty from between the face-off circles.
