The Bostik Premier club made up for last season’s 4-2 loss at home to Heybridge Swifts at the same stage

Haringey Borough manager Tom Loizou revealed the disappointment of losing in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round last season spurred his players on to come from behind to beat Poole Town by a 2-1 score on Saturday and reach the first round proper.

This is the best run the north London club have ever achieved in the famous, old competition and all eyes will be on the draw tonight at 7pm live on BBC Two.

After trailing by a single goal at the break, Loizou let his team have it at half time and the home truths paid off as substitute Jorge Djassi-Sambu equalised in the 77th minute before Joel Nouble bundled home from close range six minutes later to seal the win.

Loizou admitted: “It was a big disappointment last season and I said to the players at half time – all the build up, being in the newspapers and everyone coming to the stadium – after we lose in the FA Cup we won’t hear from anyone again until next season.

“Maybe that talk worked? I remember last season everyone was ringing me and congratulating me like family, friends and newspapers and then I woke up after the Heybridge Swifts defeat and my phone wasn’t ringing anymore. I had to check if it was still working!

“Now we are looking forward to a live draw on BBC Two and hopefully we get a draw which will help this club.

“We are never going to win it, so hopefully the first round game can be a big financial reward for us.”

The late show at Coles Park means Borough and boss Loizou are now dreaming of a money-spinning clash in the next round.

Haringey could face the likes of Sunderland or Portsmouth on November 10, but if they do not get a League One or League Two club next, the Bostik Premier side want a winnable game to see if they can make it through to the third round.

Loizou added: “I want either a team who are beatable in the first round or a really big one like a Portsmouth away – how many fans have they got?

“We might even go there and beat them! Then we could go on and play a Premier League club, so who knows.

“Obviously we are never going to win it, but we have done tremendously to be where we are for a little club and we feel like we are winners.

“If we go out in the next round, we go out, but my aim was to reach the first round proper and whatever happens now we will allow the players to enjoy themselves.

“Of course if it is a winnable tie, obviously we will go out and try to win it and we don’t want to embarrass ourselves if we play a big boy.”

Haringey Borough are number 78 in the draw for the FA Cup first round and also had more reason to celebrate earlier after they were named talkSPORT 2’s Non-League Team of the Week.
