Bostik North: Haringey Borough 1 (O’Donoghue 38) Potters Bar Town 2 (Adcock 27, Murray 66p)

Haringey Borough’s winless run in the Bostik North hit three games following a 2-1 loss at home to Potters Bar Town

Three set-pieces brought the goals with the first two beautifully executed.

The Scholars struck first. A corner from the right was delivered low to the centre of the box, with a dummy at the near post giving Billy Adcock the perfect amount of space to side foot home.

That was on 27 minutes but 11 minutes later Borough levelled with a free-kick from the right-hand side of the box.

That was hit sweetly by Michael O’Donoghue, low round the wall and inside Berkley Laurencin’s right-hand post.

But midway through the second half a coming together between Lee O’Leary and O’Donoghue brought a penalty, which Michael Murray smashed into the roof of the net.

There could have been a fourth goal from a set-piece but Derek Asamoah fired a late penalty wide.

Before the game Haringey suffered with problems with their PA system.

An 80’s megamix was in full swing when midway through Limahl’s Neverending Story it decided to stop working.

It came back on but by the time Go West’s King of Wishful Thinking came on it gave up almost altogether, making the announcement of the teams something Norman Collier would have been proud of.

On the field the technical problems were the inability of both teams to fashion many clear-cut chances.

The approach play was impressive mind.

Haringey used the width to great effect, supply plenty of dangerous crosses, while Bar used a patient approach before looking for the ball over the top to the quick men getting in behind.

But for all the probing, neither were able to really test the other goalkeeper.

Bar’s preparation had been hindered by the loss of Joakim Ehui in the warm-up, being replaced by Gilberto Soares Abril.

They had obviously settled down by the second half as they came out of the blocks quickly.

It was the full-backs who had the chances, Chris Doyle firing low and wide and then Andrew Lomas bringing a diving catching save from Austin Byfield.

That stung Haringey into action and with the crowd noise increasing Anthony McDonald hit a shot from the angle just wide.

The tackle count started to rise, especially after the penalty with Lomas getting the game’s first booking for a foul on the tricky David Olufemi, a tackle which resulted in the right back leaving the pitch.

Haringey had a glorious chance to level once again with 10 minutes remaining when Doyle was pinged for a foul on Micheal Ademiluyi.

However, Asamoah, the former Northampton Town and Carlisle United striker, slammed his penalty wide of Laurencin’s post.

Borough increased the pressure and had a further penalty shout for a push on Asamoah waved away plus a superb cross from O’Donoghue across the face of goal waiting for a final touch that never came.

A late free-kick fired over the top was their last chance as Bar hung on.
