Middlesex seamer Tim Murtagh is bringing a number of his county colleagues to Hampstead CC this weekend for a Twenty20 benefit match.

The 34-year-old, who has taken more than 500 wickets for Middlesex since joining the club from Surrey almost nine years ago, leads the side against Hampstead at their Lymington Road ground on Sunday (starting at 1pm).

“We played my old club Reigate in a Twenty20 game and lost earlier in the season,” said Murtagh. “And Hampstead are top of the league, so we might have to ask them to go easy on us!

“We’ll be bringing down as strong a team as possible and it’ll be a fun day. We don’t have too many benefits at Middlesex, so I’m immensely grateful to the club for offering me it.

“It’s nice to be given that recognition by the club, but I don’t see it as a swansong – I’m still enjoying my cricket and I’d like to keep playing as long as possible.”

Gates open at midday, with Hampstead members and non-members all welcome. Tickets are available at £5 for adults and £2 for juniors, with family tickets priced at £10.

There will also be a raffle and refreshments including a bar, barbecue, Pimm’s tent and a home-made cake stall. Proceeds go towards Murtagh’s benefit fund, as well as local colts cricket development.

Actor and Hampstead CC chairman Jim Carter, who will be providing commentary on the match, said: “This is one of the main highlights of our 150th anniversary celebrations and it’s a real coup for us to get the Middlesex pros to come down.

“We’re praying for good weather and we hope to have a good crowd in. It’d be nice to get plenty of Middlesex supporters down for this.

“We’ve got a bunch of Aussies at the club, all trying to console themselves on the miserable summer their national team have had, and they’ll be doing so by producing the best barbecue we’ve ever had.”
