Two goals from Hazuki Nagai helped Japan come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Great Britain at the FIH Champions Trophy in China.

Strikes from Sophie Bray and Tessa Howard put Great Britain in a 2-0 first quarter lead but Nagai pulled one back for Japan before half-time.

Nagai grabbed the equaliser in the third quarter from a penalty corner and despite their both efforts neither side could grab a winner in the closing stages.

GB, with Hampstead & Westminster’s Sarah Robertson in their starting line-up, flew out the traps and took the lead on four minutes as a neat team move saw a number of passes exchanged, moving the ball into the circle before it was squared to Bray to finish from close range.

And the lead was doubled soon after as Howard won the ball and powered into the circle before slapping hard into the bottom corner while falling to the ground to grab her first international goal.

Japan responded well after the first break and pulled a goal back immediately when a defensive error allowed a 2-on-1 with the keeper and the ball was passed to Nagai to pass into an empty net.

An even third quarter followed but Japan ended it strongly and after a flurry of penalty corners grabbed an equaliser as Nagai fired low into the bottom corner past Sabbie Heesh.

Both sides had chances to move ahead and claim three points but they weren’t taken meaning the spoils were shared.

Next up for Great Britain are world number one side the Netherlands who they play at 10am GMT on Thursday morning, live on BT Sport.
