Tottenham Ladies stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to an incredible 27 after a 1-0 win away to Charlton Athletic.

It returned them to the top of the FA Women’s Premier League, two points clear of their south London rivals, who they have three games in hand on.

Wendy Martin got the only goal, her 17th of the campaign, on 32 minutes, pouncing on a rebound after a Bianca Baptiste effort was saved.

The hosts had the better start with Kim Dixson firing over from 20 yards.

But Spurs soon wrestled back the momentum. Katie Flack blocked a Martin strike after a flowing move before a mesmerising run and shot from Lucia Leon saw her rattle the crossbar.

Leon was proving a menace and after a cross fizzed across goal, Nikita Whinnett’s curler was blocked by Dixson.

Whinnett sent another effort just wide before Martin scored and it took the goal to get Charlton back on the front foot.

Former Lilywhite, Avilla Bergin, looked for a response breaking away but was matched by Josie Green, who tracked back superbly to stop the counter in its traps, then forced the shot wayward.

Baptiste hit the side netting as the half closed and the second half saw Tottenham go close on a number of occasions.

Baptiste had the first chance which was palmed away by Alex Baker and the Charlton keeper also denied Kelley Blanchflower.

It was all one-way traffic though and Kit Graham fired wide under pressure from Green.

The best chance fell to Rosey Sullivan but she fired off the underside of the crossbar from distance.

Tottenham Ladies: Wayne, Leon, Schillaci, Hector, Rawle (Pond 86), Green, Mclean, Soobadoo (Vio 74), Whinnett, Martin, Baptiste (Blanchflower 86)

Subs (not used): Lynch
