The sides were familiar to each having both been promoted from the FA Women's Championship last season, and it was United again who came out on top against Spurs.

Hanson gave the away side the lead in the first half before an Ashleigh Neville own-goal doubled United's lead after the break.

Lauren James was sent off late on for two yellow cards, but Jane Ross squeezed home in the last minute to put the gloss on an impressive away performance.

United started the match superbly as James hit the woodwork within a minute, and they deservedly took the lead after 13 minutes as Jackie Groenen saw her shot well blocked, but it fell to Hanson who finished well into the bottom right corner.

The hosts started to come into it as the half wore in, a great run from Kit Graham sparking them into life before Chloe Peplow fired over a free-kick from the edge of the box on the verge of half-time.

United took control six minutes after the break though, Neville turning the ball into her own net as she slid in to try and clear Galton's superb cross.

Tottenham again responded well, Rosella Ayane's cross almost looping into the far corner before Rachel Furness' wonderful long-range effort was tipped over.

James was sent off in the last minute for a cynical second yellow, but United responded in style as Ross controlled in the box and poked home to seal a comprehensive win.

Tottenham's Furness said: "Very frustrating afternoon for us. I think we conceded sloppy goals and we haven't taken our chances which at this level you have to do, so we fell short today.

"We know Manchester United are a very good team and a physical team, we've got to match their hard work and unfortunately it wasn't good enough today.

"We are creating opportunities, we just need to work harder on the training pitch to convert them.

"Their keeper has pulled off two good saves, it's unfortunately not our day today.

"We've been very fortunate over the last couple of weeks, we have played in front of big crowds. I love playing in front of a crowd, you want to do well for the fans so hopefully they come back.

"It's disappointing today but I don't think that will define our season."
