The Belgian impressed in the 1-0 victory over Inter Milan and now wants bragging rights against Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur centre back Toby Alderweireld is hopeful the club can finish off a jam-packed week with a win at Arsenal after crucial victories over Inter Milan and Chelsea already.

The Belgian was at the heart of the Spurs defence for the Wembley Stadium wins on Saturday and Wednesday.

He shone in both the 3-1 success over the Blues and the 1-0 victory in Group B of the Champions League against the Italians.

It is likely he will also start against the Gunners on Sunday and the 29-year-old knows the importance of the fixture.

“The games are coming quickly – big games. We started the week very well against Chelsea,” Alderweireld said.

“Now Inter and again we were very good, and put in a solid performance against a big team and Sunday is a big game – everyone knows this.

“Everybody who follows football knows how big this game is. It’s one of the biggest, maybe the biggest derby in the world so everybody knows it.”

Wednesday saw Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen reunited in defence for the first time in two months.

The latter suffered a hamstring injury in a win at Huddersfield Town on September 29 and the Inter Milan fixture marked his return to the team.

Alderweireld, who featured alongside his fellow Belgium international at Ajax for four years, said: “I think I’ve played more games with him than without him so I’m very happy to see him back.”

The Belgians have been team-mates for a long time and Christian Eriksen is the same after he joined Spurs from the Netherlands club the season after Vertonghen’s arrival.

It was the Dane who grabbed the winner on Wednesday when he fired high into the roof of the net after 80 minutes to secure a 1-0 success over Inter Milan.

Eriksen was the fourth Spurs goalscorer this week after Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Heung-min Son netted against Chelsea, which highlights how goals are coming from all areas now.

“That’s a big strength in the team,” Alderweireld said. “Everybody can score and make the difference whether they play or come on, so that’s positive.

“I think Inter defended well, they tried to play as well, but we didn’t concede a lot of chances.

“We defended very well as a team. In the first half we had a couple of chances, in the second half as well, and we’re all happy with this goal because it’s a very big result.”
