A blistering spell of three goals in seven minutes helped Tottenham ease into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup with a 4-2 win over Liverpool at the Lane on Wednesday night, writes Ben McPartland.

The holders, who made seven changes from Sunday's league win over Manchester City, forced the breakthrough on 38 minutes when Fraizer Campbell pulled the ball back for Roman Pavlyuchenko to score.

Campbell then grabbed his first goal for Spurs just four minutes later, slotting home after a mix-up in the Liverpool defence.

Campbell notched his second on 45 minutes, heading in Aaron Lennon's cross to give Tottenham an unassailable lead.

Liverpool pulled one back four minutes into the second half through midfielder Damien Plessis but the Lilywhites quickly hit back and Pavlyuchenko's second strike on 51 minutes put the tie beyond the reach of the Merseysiders.

Gomes gifted Liverpool a second goal, making a hash of another corner to allow Sami Hyypia to nod in on 63 minutes.

The hapless keeper was later carried off on a stretcher after colliding with Liverpool's Philipp Degen but Spurs kept their composure to book their place into tomorrow's draw.
