Andros Townsend has welcomed his former Tottenham team-mate Jermain Defoe back to the Premier League – but he hopes the striker will not be making his debut against Spurs at White Hart Lane this weekend.

Defoe scored 143 goals in all competitions during his two spells with the Lilywhites and, having departed to MLS outfit Toronto FC last January, he is now returning to England with Sunderland.

The 32-year-old, who has recently been training with Spurs to maintain his fitness, has stated that he “can’t wait to start scoring goals for Sunderland” – and his new club’s next fixture is away against his old club Tottenham on Saturday.

Asked about the prospect of facing Defoe on his prospective debut this weekend, Townsend broke into a wide smile and said: “It’s going to be great.

“He’s been in the training ground for a few weeks now and hopefully he hasn’t been in the manager’s office, looking at his tactics board!

“Jermain’s a fantastic character and he’s served this club well so if he does play on Saturday I’m sure the fans will give him the reception he deserves.

“He’s a legend at Spurs - the goals he’s scored for us over the years, it’s fantastic. Of course I hope he doesn’t play on Saturday for personal reasons, but if he does play it will be great to see him.

“I only spoke to him briefly but you know Jermain Defoe – he’s always hungry to get out on that pitch and score goals, whether it’s in England or Canada. He always strives to score goals. No matter how many goals he’s scored he just loves scoring goals. I’m sure we’ll see him scoring handfuls of goals again.

“You know with Jermain you can’t give him two yards, because he’ll get the ball out of his feet and have a shot at goal. Hopefully he doesn’t do it on Saturday but I wish him all the best for the rest of the season.”
