TOTTENHAM all but booked their place in the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup last night (Thursday) when they cruised to a deserved win against NEC Nigmegan in Holland.
Jamie O'Hara's 14th minute goal was enough to earn maximum points and Harry Redknapp's side now top Group D with six points. The Lilywhites also have the luxury of a final home game against Spartak Moscow next month.
O'Hara, back from suspension after being sent off against Udinese in Tottenham's opening group game, was on hand to nod home from close range after Fraizer Campbell had smacked Gareth Bale's low cross onto the underside of the crossbar. The lively youngster, who has come through the ranks at the club, was Tottenham's most influential player throughout the 90 minutes.
Redknapp made six changes to the side that beat Blackburn on Sunday - with four under-18s on the bench - but the visitors were always in control. Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes also produced a much more confident performance. The former PSV Eindhoven keeper looked assured in coming for crosses and kept a second consecutive clean sheet.
Gomes pulled off a terrific save midway through the first half, beating out Moestafa El-Kabir's shot before defender Chris Gunter completed the clearance with a superbly-timed tackle on Lasse Schone.
Darren Bent came close to a second goal for Spurs shortly after the break but his close-range header was tipped over by the NEC keeper from David Bentley's cross. Redknapp gave first-team debuts to two teenagers, John Obika and Ryan Mason, in the closing stages and Spurs easily held out for a seventh win from nine games under Redknapp.
Tottenham: Gomes, Gunter, Dawson, Woodgate, Bale, Bentley (Mason 90), Zokora, Huddlestone, O'Hara, Bent (Lennon 71), Campbell (Obika 83).
Subs Not Used: Cesar, Assou-Ekotto, Bostock, Smith.
