Michael Dawson is delighted to be back on the same side as Jermain Defoe, who has returned to Spurs after finally completing his £15million transfer from Portsmouth last Friday.

"Everyone knows Jermain - it does not seem too long since he was here," said Dawson.

"He is a sharp little fellow and signing players like him can only be good for the squad.

"I've played against him in training and in matches but I'd rather play with him in my team.

"He's quick in and around the box and he scores goals. I'm sure he'll liven up the dressing room - it won't take him long to settle in."

Spurs return to Premier League action on Sunday against Defoe's old team Pompey at the Lane and Dawson knows three points are crucial after Sunday's stoppage time setback at Wigan.

"Portsmouth is a massive, massive game for us," he said. "We know what the Premier League means to the club - it's our bread and butter - and we need points.
