SPURS produced a much improved performance in an entertaining game on Saturday. Having gone ahead through Dimitar Berbatov's early goal, Tottenham had the better of the exchanges and should have confirmed their superiority with a second goal before the home side levelled on the half hour.
Yet, Radek Cerny, in for the injured Paul Robinson, was caught in a misunderstanding with Pascal Chimbonda after just four minutes and was relieved to punch away the danger from Roque Santa Cruz.
Two minutes later Spurs went ahead. Steed Malbranque supplied Jermaine Jenas, whose cross was poked home by Berbatov. Soon after Rovers Brad Friedel denied Berbatov in a one-on-one and with Spurs making good use of the flanks, a second goal looked likely. However, it was Rovers who scored. David Bentley lost the attention of Chimbonda with a weaving run to create the Rovers' goal for Morten Gamst Pedersen.
The second half opened with Berbatov again denied by Friedel before Jason Roberts tested Cerny.
Then, Didier Zokora released Aaron Lennon but Malbranque took a touch too many, allowing Friedel to save.
Gilberto was lucky not to have conceded a penalty for a check on Bentley in the area before the game fizzled out.
