Bostik Premier: Potters Bar Town 4 Wingate & Finchley 0

Potters Bar Town’s new managerial team enjoyed an almost perfect start to their tenure at the Pakex Stadium as they hit four past Wingate & Finchley in the Bostik Premier to ruin a celebratory day for Blues defender Marc Weatherstone.

The experienced centre back, who returned to the Maurice Rebak Stadium during the summer after a stint with Dulwich Hamlet, broke a club record on Saturday.

After playing 451 times for Wingate prior to the weekend, Weatherstone’s outing in Hertfordshire took him past previous holder Daniel Nielsen.

It was a memorable day for the defender, who was presented with a ‘452’ shirt before kick-off to commemorate his record while chairman Aron Sharpe delivered a speech in the changing room.

Unfortunately Potters Bar, who had plenty to celebrate with a new managerial team in the dug-out, made sure Weatherstone’s day went downhill from 3pm.

It was the first official game in charge for Lee O’Leary and Scott Cousins since their appointment was confirmed and the Town players responded in style.

Three first-half goals from Dernell Wynter and a fifth in three games for Brad Sach gave the Scholars a comfortable win.

The opener came on eight minutes as Wynter slammed home the rebound following Shane Gore’s save from a Keagan Cole penalty and seven minutes later it was 2-0 as Wynter drove into the box.

A second penalty gave him the chance to complete his hat-trick.

The second half proved a slightly more mundane affair as Wingate tied to gain a foothold, but Potters Bar held out comfortably.

And after hitting the post, Sach had better luck latching onto a Ryan Forde free-kick to finish an excellent day for the Scholars.

While it was disappointment for Wingate and Weatherstone, the centre back should take great pride from his achievement.

To play 452 games in non-league football alone is a terrific record, but to do it with one club is astonishing.

It was a frustrating defeat for Blues, but with a stalwart like Weatherstone at the back, there can be no doubt they will enjoy plenty of better times throughout this season.
