Hendon manager Gary McCann is proud of his side’s performance despite crashing out of the FA Trophy with a 3-0 defeat to National League high-flyers Sutton United.

The Greens missed out on the chance of making it into the competitions last 16 teams and £7,000 in prize money thanks to goals from Kieron Cadogan, Adam Coombes and Tommy Wright at Gander Green Lane.

McCann admits they were disappointed to concede the first goal but believes they stepped their game up and rose to challenge of facing a side two divisions higher than them.

“I thought we were good value for being in the game for as long as we were,” he said.

“We were disappointed with the first goal, it was a lucky deflection that fell into the path of their wide-man, should we have maybe cleared it quicker, yes, should we have identified we were in danger quicker, yes.

“I’m really proud of the performance, I thought the performance was of a level that maybe levelled up to theirs, more so than levelled down.

“I was proud of everyone out there and I think the score line flatters them a little, I honestly do.”

McCann praised Sutton’s quality and revealed they were more clinical and opportunist with their chances.

“You can see they’ve got quality all over the pitch and give you very little, and they obviously punish you at the other end, and that’s what they did.

“Three little lapses on our part or half errors have been punished and that’s the different maybe between the levels.

“They’ve taken advantage of situations that maybe we haven’t.”

The Greens players put themselves in the spotlight admits McCann after their strong start to the season and putting on a strong display against the Ambers.

“It’s a window for them, I think they’ve created an awful lot of interest from a far in what they’ve done already this season, and this was a stage for them to showcase it a little more.

“I don’t think they played as well as they could have compared to recent games but sometimes you have to give opposition credit for that.

“It’s a perfect window for them to show what they’re about and show their qualities and I think they have done themselves justice.

“They played well and stood toe-to-toe with a very good side that at the right end of the National League so there is no shame in the performance we put together both individually and collectively.”
