FA Cup fourth qualifying round: Haringey Borough 2 Poole Town 1
Haringey Borough made it through to the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in their history with a 2-1 win over Poole Town.
In a cagey first half, Boro fell behind with around a quarter of an hour remaining in the first half after conceding a penalty in the box.
However, the Coles Park club battled back in the second period to come from behind and triumph.
Haringey’s first real sight of goal came in the 21st minute when a free-kick into the box found Mark Kirby at the back post, but the home defender nodded over the bar.
Ten minutes later, Boro gifted Poole the chance to take the lead from 12 yards when Lionel Stone fouled Richard Gillespie in the box.
Steve Devlin stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted to give the Dolphins the initiative.
Tom Loizou’s men almost had an immediate response when Kirby headed a free-kick back across goal from the back post in the 33rd minute, but Joe Staunton was unable to get on the end of it.
That ensured the Coles Park went into half-time trailing to Devlin’s penalty for the Dorset club.
Haringey came out flying in the second half, with Joel Nouble firing wide after Michael Ademiluyi crossed into the box inside the a minute of the restart.
From the next attack a minute later, Ademiluyi then drew a fine save from Luke Carney with his effort from just inside the area.
That handed Boro a corner on the left which found Scott Mitchell, but the defender nodded over from 10 yards.
A corner in the 55th minute presented the Coles Park club with another chance, but Chinedu McKenzie saw his resulting effort cleared off the line.
Poole had a glorious chance to double their lead when Richard Gillespie was set away one-on-one with home stopper Valery Pajetat, only for his effort to hit the post before the Haringey custodian gathered in the 70th minute.
It proved a costly miss for the visitors as Boro drew level through substitute Jorge Djassi-Sambu in the 77th minute.
A corner from the right found Nouble, who did well to fashion room for himself in the area before passing across goal for Djassi-Sambu to prod home.
Djassi-Sambu went close to putting the Coles Park club ahead five minutes later, but his header from a corner was saved by Luke Cairney.
Haringey, though, were able to hit the front in the 83rd minute when Nouble bundled home from close range after replacement Karl Akinwande’s initial shot was saved.
That proved to be the winning goal that would send Haringey through to the first round, with all eyes on Monday evening’s draw.
