Hornchurch maintained their 13-point lead at the top of the table thanks to a brace from George Purcell at Bridge Avenue.

But a fourth defeat in seven outings left Borough two points adrift of a play-off place.

Anthony McDonald sent a first-minute chance over the bar for the visitors, who had to replace Quba Gordon with Jorge Djassi-Sambu inside the opening quarter of an hour.

And after a relatively quiet opening 20 minutes, Urchins took the lead on 28 minutes through all-time leading scorer Purcell.

Rakim Richards sent a chance over from full 30 yards for the visitors, before some neat play by Ralston Gabriel set up McDonald, who fired just wide of the far post on 34 minutes.

And Purcell had a shot deflected behind for the home side, before Nathan Livings saw his corner cleared by the Haringey defence.

Livings then played a through ball into the path of Theo Fairweather-Johnson, but Valery Pajetat came out to smother.

Richards skewed a good chance wide for Boro within a minute of the restart, while Sam Mott produced a good save to deny Gabriel’s shot on the turn on 53 minutes.

And after Alex Bentley replaced Tobi Joseph just past the hour mark, Hornchurch doubled their lead on 72 minutes as Purcell picked up his second goal of the afternoon, when Sean Roberts saw his pass helped on by Fairweather-Johnson.

The hosts went close to a third when Jamie Hursit played a superb ball into the box and substitute Chris Assombalonga headed straight at Pajetat.

And Assombalonga poked another chance wide after more good build-up play by Fairweather-Johnson seven minutes from time.

Instead, Haringey halved the deficit on 86 minutes when a ball into the box was not cleared and Lionel Stone hooked it past Mott to give the visitors late hope of salvaging a point.

And Borough went close to levelling in the last minute of normal time when a ball into the box found Richards, who scooped over from close range.

Hornchurch held on during stoppage time to complete a quick double over the north London club, having won 2-1 at Coles Park last month.
