Arsene Wenger declared his side would make a serious title challenge after Arsenal's first win at West Ham for seven years, courtesy of Robin van Persie's 13th minute header.
"There's room for improvement but I am very proud of what the team is achieving at the moment," said Wenger. "I believe we can challenge. We are very young, but we play."
Meanwhile, the Gunners announced record profits of £51m, while turnover went past the £200m mark for the first time.
Ian Wright scored a hat-trick - and set up David Rocastle's goal - on his league bow for the Gunners in a 4-0 win at Southampton. Arsenal are also installed 11/4 to join favourites to win the European Cup.
Meanwhile, the club mourned the loss of 1930s winger Joe Hulme, who died at Highlands Hospital in Winchmore Hill on September 26, aged 87.
Pat Jennings saved a penalty on his 750th league appearance as Don Howe's Gunners ran out 2-1 winners at Coventry in front of 14,394 fans at Highfield Road.
Paul Mariner netted the winner with just five minutes remaining after Tony Woodcock had scored Arsenal's opener. Champions Liverpool slipped 0-2 at home to Sheffield Wednesday while leaders Spurs beat Luton 4-2 at White Hart Lane
