After a shaky start to his managerial career at Upton Park, Gianfranco Zola (pictured) has steadied the ship at a club believed to be on the financial precipice.

With £14m pocketed from the sale of the disruptive Craig Bellamy to Man City, Zola spent at least half of that this week, signing Ugandan-born Germany Under-19 international striker Savio Nsereko for a club record fee from Italian side Brescia.

He was expected to play a part in the Hammers' home game with Hull City on Wednesday night, subject to international clearance.

That purchase also showed that, financially, the club may be stronger than some might believe.

They went into that game against the Tigers unbeaten in five games and arrive at Emirates on Saturday with decent away form under their belt, beating Portsmouth (4-1) and holding Chelsea (1-1) in recent weeks.

Arsenal will also need to keep a tight rein on Carlton Cole. The former Chelsea striker netted five times in the six games prior to the visit of Hull.

Arsenal earned a valuable 2-0 win in the East End in October.
