“We were a bit more under pressure [in the first 20 minutes]. It was negative result but a positive performance.”

Wenger fielded his youngest Premier League side since the infamous 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford in August 2011 after he made eight changes to the side that startaed against Atletico Madrid at the Emirates on Thursday evening.

The late loss marked the Frenchman’s final match at Old Trafford as Arsenal manager – with the hosts marking the occasion with a pre-match presentation on the pitch by his old foe Sir Alex Ferguson.

When Wenger was asked his views after the match he said: “I am programmed to win games, that doesn’t change. I am grateful to Manchester United.

“It was very classy from them. It’s the first time i get a trophy before the game.

“Now I want to go and have a red wine with Sir Alex. You always get a good bottle with him....Once you are not a danger people love you.”

The Frenchman also took time to praise his young players,

He added: “Ainsley Maitland-Niles is slowly getting to be the player I think he can be. He creates as well.

“[Tino] Mavropanos in training has shown top quality. Can he show that in a big game? You never know. I think he did. He surprised everyone by his quality today.

“My successor will watch this game today. Hopefully he will come to positive conclusions. Some of the young players have showed they can handle it 100 per cent.”

When asked if he would face Mourinho again he replied: “At the moment I am a bit in unknown territory. Will I take a break? I would be surprised if I see him next year.

“I don’t know where I will be [next season]. I am the only one in the world who has worked for 35 years without interruption.”

The Frenchman who will step down after 22 years at the end of this season also gave an injury update saying Mkhitaryan had a ‘little knock’ on his knee.

David Ospina has a rib issue while Alex Iwobi has a hamstring problem.
