A two-time Premier League title winner as a player at the club, the Swedish international returned in the summer to take up the post.

And he saw his young charges claim a 3-0 win at non-league Hornchurch in midweek, after the 18-year-old Emile Smith Rowe had impressed for Unai Emery’s first team in Singapore.

He said: “I love being a coach, love coaching. I think it’s great. I love to see the players hopefully get better. For me it’s very good.

“The whole point for us is developing, it’s not the league table. It’s getting the players to train with the first team and stick with the first team, that is our job.

“It’s great when they get that opportunity, maybe they will come back to us after they are done with pre-season, it’s a great bite for them to do that, to know what is needed from them to stay with the first team.”
