Pat Rice, who was Arsene Wenger’s assistant manager for 16 years has said the time was right for the long-serving Frenchman to leave the North London giants.

Rice, who served Arsenal for more than four decades as a player, youth coach and No2 to the Frenchman agreed Wenger leaving in May was the right time to depart.

Speaking at a launch event at the Emirates on Tuesday to publicise the forthcoming match between Arsene Legends and Real Madrid Legends Rice said: “Arsene’s a very intelligent guy.

“I suppose it was just one of those things whereby things didn’t fall into place they way he would have wanted them to – and also like the players would have wanted them to.

“It was just a matter of whenever your time is up or when you’ve been there a certain amount of time and it’s time for you to go on then that is your choice.”

Arsenal Legends v Real Madrid Legends, Emirates Stadium, Saturday, September 8, kick-off 2pm.
