EMPICS Sport

Arsenal battled hard but were beaten 2-0 at home to Barcelona. Here’s how we rated the Gunners.

Petr Cech 7

Made one world-class save from a Neymar shot and didn’t really do anything wrong all night. Left stranded for the first goal.

Hector Bellerin 7

Kept Neymar quiet for so long and was consistently solid down the right. Played himself out of trouble often.

Laurent Koscielny 6

Physically dominant in a real battle against Suarez but beaten on the break that led to Messi’s opener.

Per Mertesacker 7

Read the game well all night and constantly made crucial interceptions at the back.

Nacho Monreal 8

Picked up an early booking but he was never in danger of being sent off. Excellent defensive cover down the left.

Francis Coquelin 6

Messi and co. got behind him on occasion but overall a solid display in front of the back four. Taken off disastrously in the second half.

Aaron Ramsey 8

One of his best performances for weeks. Did some brilliant defensive work in more of a holding role alongside Coquelin.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 6

Worked hard but he wasted a great chance on the break with a poor chance. Picked up a knock.

Mesut Ozil 6

Started off a few counter-attacks but did not really get the ball in his favourite areas. Looked like he gave up after the first goal.

Alexis Sanchez 6

Brilliant work rate as always and he looked dangerous on the break but he’s just lacking that final touch at the moment.

Olivier Giroud 6

Chances were few and far between but his hold up play was good. Played a poor pass for Walcott when he should have had a crack at goal.

Substitutes

Theo Walcott 5

No real influence on the game after coming on.

Danny Welbeck 6

Worked hard as ever and ran the channels but he never got a sight of goal.

Mathieu Flamini 3

Came on and instantly gave away a terrible penalty. The game needed a cool head and he did not provide it.
