Arsenal were left stunned after their heaviest home defeat for 69 years as their 17-match unbeaten start to the season is shattered.

Manchester United left Highbury with a 6-2 Rumbelows Cup win - Lee Sharpe firing a hat-trick - with the Gunners shipping as many goals as they have conceded in 14 league games.

Arsenal, losing 3-0 at the break, pulled two goals back straight after the restart before United hit them on the break. Manager George Graham moaned: "We had to play with fire in our bellies at the start of the second half and we did.

"But once we had pulled the two goals back, the approach should have been a bit calmer. We allowed United to hit us on the break.

"'We've had heavy defeats before, but life goes on. They can do you some good. It depends how you react to them."

United boss Alex Ferguson said: "All of my players were magnificent - it was my biggest win at the club, and I saved it for a special occasion.
