Hampstead scored five tries to earn a bonus point in their 32-22 home win over Tabard in London North-West Division Two, but coach Peter Breen wants his side to be even more clinical.

Tabard got the opening try but Hampstead responded with two scores of their own inside three minutes, with returning captain Andy McEwen touching down before Hampstead recovered the ball from their kick-off and put together multiple phases, passes and off-loads to send Shane Godding over the line.

The two sides then traded tries, with rampant centre and man of the match Christian Metson going over for Hampstead, who took a 15-10 lead into the break.

Rob Goode and McEwen were excelling in the forwards while Tom Richards enjoyed a notable debut and utility forward Freddie Jackson excelled again in both the back and front row.

Tabard kept themselves in contention with two tries – one of them converted – but Dan Dimoline and Alex Woodhouse touched down for the hosts in the second half, while Dimoline added a conversion and a penalty to secure a 10-point victory.

Breen is still eyeing improvements though, stating: “Whilst I am delighted that we are now securing first phase possession and playing an off-loading game, which we train for, we need to make rapid improvements elsewhere.

“Our inability to score tries when they look easier to score than not is a cause of frustration. We will endeavour to eliminate these problems.

“That aside, we have already won more games this season (four) than all of last season (three). We can now go into the break with our heads held high and looking forward to some very good rugby.

“Freddie Jackson has made a huge difference to the side and the club, alleviating our front row issues.”

This Saturday, the England v New Zealand international match will be shown in Hampstead’s new clubhouse - the club bar at the Duke of Hamilton in Hampstead.

Any non-club members are welcome to join them for a social drink and to watch the match.
