England women’s hockey coach Danny Kerry admitted his side had earned some lessons during their 5-1 loss to Argentina at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.

Hannah Martin’s first senior international goal cancelled out Agustina Habif’s opener in the first of the weekend’s two Investec Internationals, but Martina Cavallero deflected home from another penalty corner late in the third quarter.

Magdalena Fernandez made it 3-1 from another set-piece early in the final session, with Delfina Merino and Habif adding late goals to give the final scoreline a more flattering look.

England included nine of Team GB’s Olympic gold medalists in their matchday squad, but also saw six players make their first appearance for the national team on home soil, including former Havering and Old Loughts midfielder Emily Defroand.

And Kerry said: “It was a very valuable lesson. Lessons learned at this point in a cycle are even more valuable and the harder they are, the more they resonate.

“It’s one thing to say to the players ‘this is what we need to do’. Now they understand the significance of it.”

Hundreds of children were invited to play on the pitch after players had spent half an hour signing autographs in a move designed to inspire future generatoins of hockey fans and players.

And England are due to meet Olympic silver medalists and world number one side the Netherlands on Sunday (2pm) in front of a sold-out crowd, with the match also being shown live on BT Sport from 1.30pm.

The Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre will then host the men’s Hockey World League semi-final from June 15-25, where England will be battling for World Cup qualification.
