Middlesex captain Dawid Malan paid tribute to Eoin Morgan following their record-breaking Vitality Blast T20 win against Somerset at Taunton on Friday.

Morgan hit an unbeaten 83 off just 29 balls as Middlesex reached their target of 227 with six wickets and three overs in hand to book a quarter-final date against Nottinghamshire.

Malan (41 off 14), Paul Stirling (25 off 10) and AB de Villiers (32 off 16) also chipped in before Morgan took over, hitting eight sixes and five fours.

And Malan said: "We saw why Eoin Morgan has won a World Cup and is the best captain England have had. In the big moments, he stands up. It was fantastic striking from a bloke who is struggling a bit with his back.

"I didn't realise we had definitely qualified for the quarter-finals at the end. AB de Villiers is available for the quarter-finals and Finals Day if we get there.

"Now we go to Trent Bridge to face Notts and will look forward to that."

Middlesex looked up against it after Somerset amassed 226-5 thanks to a stunning unbeaten 101 off 47 balls from Tom Abell.

Tom Banton hit 62 off 39 at the top of the order, while Toby Roland-Jones (2-32) escaped with respectable figures.

But Malan got his side off to a flying start in reply, putting on 67 for the first wicket with Stirling in just four overs.

And although the opening pair fell to successive balls, de Villiers kept up the momentum before Morgan's late attack.

Malan added: "At the halfway stage I was a bit frustrated with the way we had bowled and fielded. I thought we made some silly mistakes.

But coming to Taunton, batsmen always know it's wonderful ground to bat on and if you can get off to a flier you are always in the game.

"If you get the ball in the air here it tends to go for six and if you beat the fielders it's four. There was not one person in our dressing room who did not feel we could chase down the target."
