The former Maidenhead United forward has scored five goals in four FA Cup games this season

Chinedu McKenzie is optimistic the current Haringey Borough squad can make history and lead the Coles Park club into the FA Cup first round this weekend.

The Bostik Premier outfit are set to host Southern League Premier Division South side Poole Town on Saturday with the winner due to pocket £25,000 in prize money.

Whoever makes it through will also give themselves a chance of a real money-spinning first round tie with League One and League Two clubs entering at that stage.

Haringey have never reached the first round proper, but did get this far – the fourth qualifying round – last season before losing 4-2 at home to then-Bostik North rivals Heybridge Swifts.

Tom Loizou’s men have seen off the likes of Stanway Rovers, Brentwood Town, Erith Town and AFC Sudbury to reach this stage with McKenzie netting in every round and he doesn’t want the FA Cup run to end any time soon.

He said: “The club as a whole has done extremely well to get to the fourth qualifying round for the second year running now.

“All of the boys are buzzing and more than ready to create more history for Haringey Borough.”

Loizou has seen his team excel in the FA Cup with the Coles Park club winning all four ties in the 90 minutes so far.

Borough have actually secured more victories in this competition than the Bostik Premier, although they have only played nine times in the league and still triumphed impressively on three occasions.

McKenzie scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 success at home to Stanway on August 25 before he netted in the 3-2 victory at Brentwood two weeks later.

He struck Haringey’s second in the 2-0 home win against Erith on September 22 and was at it again on October 6, scoring a double in the 2-1 triumph over Sudbury at Coles Park.

“I’m buzzing to have scored five goals in four FA Cup games for the ‘Boro’ so far,” McKenzie said.

“Every game is another chance to score, so to keep the goal run going would be good, but I know it’ll be a tough test against Poole on Saturday.”

The Dolphins were playing in the National League South last season, so will provide the north London club with a big challenge.

Borough warmed up for the tie with a 3-1 defeat at Burgess Hill Town on Saturday, but after they were allowed to call off Monday’s fixture with Carshalton Athletic, they will hope to be fresh and raring to go for the visit of Poole.

A club statement added: “Supporters are reminded the free season tickets are not valid for this game.”

It is £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and free admission for under-16s.
