Bostik Premier: Wingate & Finchley 1 Whitehawk 1

Alieu Njie’s 90th-minute goal was not enough to help Wingate & Finchley secure a maiden win in 2019 after fellow strugglers Whitehawk held them to a 1-1 draw at the Maurice Rebak Stadium on Saturday.

The two Bostik Premier clubs, who find themselves in the bottom three, were looking to claim a crucial three points, but in the end they had to settle for a share of the spoils.

With the Blues using AI (Artificial Intelligence) football coach for the first time, there was more interest in this proverbial six-pointer than usual.

It failed to help Wingate produce more in the first half as the opening 45 minutes went by with little to note.

Things did pick up more after the restart, however, and Whitehawk took the lead with 51 on the clock.

Shane Gore managed to save Ky Marsh-Brown’s effort, but the ball rolled for Rhyle Ovenden and he tapped home.

Wingate responded well to going behind, yet looked set for a painful defeat on home turf to a relegation rival.

However, with the 90 minutes up Reece Beckles-Richards cross was cleared to Njie and he smashed home to spark jubilant scenes at Summers Lane.

Wingate, despite trailing for most of the second half, had clinched a point and they will hope it is crucial come the end of the season.

Both clubs remain in the relegation zone with Dave Norman’s Blues in 20th spot and three points from safety while their winless run now stretches to nine matches.
